Business Development Leader (Utility) - West

Position Overview

Job Summary

The Business Development Leader is responsible for driving growth and expanding market presence within the electric utility sector. This role focuses on identifying and developing new business opportunities, building strategic relationships, securing
utility approvals and specifications, and positioning the company as a trusted partner for utilities across the assigned territory. The ideal candidate is a proactive hunter with deep utility industry knowledge, strong relationship-building skills, and a proven
ability to influence utility engineers, standards committees, procurement teams, consultants, and executive leadership. The position will report directly to the Utility Sales Segment Manager.

A. Responsibilities and Duties

  • Market Development: Develop and execute strategic plans to expand JST’s presence within investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, and electric cooperatives throughout the Western United States.
  • Business Development: Identify, qualify, and pursue new opportunities for transformers, switchgear, breakers, and related utility infrastructure projects, driving long-term revenue growth and market share.
  • Utility Approvals & Specifications: Lead efforts to secure utility approvals, specification acceptance, and preferred vendor status by building relationships with utility engineering, standards, and procurement teams.
  • Relationship Management: Establish and maintain strong relationships with utility decision-makers, consulting engineers, EPC firms, rep agencies, and industry influencers to create and advance opportunities.
  • Industry Engagement: Represent JST at utility conferences, trade shows, industry associations, and customer events to increase brand awareness and strengthen market presence.
  • Market Intelligence: Monitor utility capital plans, industry trends, competitive activity, and regulatory developments, providing actionable market feedback to leadership, engineering, and product management teams.
  • Sales & Technical Support: Partner with sales, engineering, and product teams to support customer presentations, technical discussions, proposal development, and strategic pursuits.
  • Pipeline Management: Maintain an active pipeline of opportunities, providing accurate forecasting, account activity updates, and growth plans through CRM tools and regular business reviews.

B.   Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Business, or related field (Electrical Engineering or technical background
    strongly preferred).
  • 3+ years of sales, account management, or business development experience within the electrical power or industrial
    equipment sector (transformers, switchgear, controls, automation, power distribution, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of utility procurement processes, engineering standards, and capital project planning.
  • Excellent relationship-building, communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 30–40% within the assigned territory and attend industry events.
  • Key Competencies: 
    • Experience working with rep agencies, utilities, distributors, and EPCs
    • Familiarity with regulatory and compliance requirements in the utility space

C.    Work Environment and Special Considerations

  • Remote location working from home.
  • Frequent travel to customers and factory sites required.
  • Occasional trips to trade show events, suppliers and industry events are required.

D.     Terms of Employment

  • Reports to Utility Sales Segment Manager.
  • Pay is commensurate with experience and background.
