Application Engineer - SPT

Job Summary

In a custom‑designed, engineered‑to‑order manufacturing environment, provide application engineering and technical support for small power transformers (SPT). Responsible for the definition, application review, design coordination, development support, and testing of medium‑ and high‑voltage power transformers. Serve as the primary technical interface between customers, sales, engineering, and manufacturing to ensure project execution meets scope, quality, schedule, and performance requirements.

A. Key Responsibilities

  • Review customer specifications, drawings, and technical requirements for substation power transformers; coordinate and lead project execution with factory teams and customers from an engineering standpoint.
  • Support customization of standardized SPT designs to meet project‑specific requirements, utility standards, and applicable IEEE/ANSI codes.
  • Drive timely drawing submittals and approvals to obtain manufacturing release from customers.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for customers via phone, email, virtual meetings, or onsite visits.
  • For large‑scale, high‑profile, or high‑complexity projects, assume a project engineering / technical project management role, responsible for up to 90% of technical coordination.
  • Respond to and resolve technical inquiries from customers, sales managers, and sales representatives.
  • Lead Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT)—virtually or in person—demonstrating strong knowledge of SPT design, test procedures, and acceptance criteria.
  • Support resolution of quality issues, after‑sales concerns, and customer complaints in coordination with quality, manufacturing, and service teams.
  • When required, travel to customer or job sites to support commissioning, field issues, corrective actions, or post‑delivery technical discussions.
  • Provide plant support during product startup, technical transfer, manufacturing reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.

B.   Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering field from an accredited institution.
  • Previous project or application engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • 3–7 years of experience in substation power transformer (SPT) manufacturing, design, testing, or application engineering.
  • Direct experience with liquid filled power transformers, including oil filled insulation systems and auxiliary components.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
  • Ability to travel up to once per month (domestic and occasional international).
  • Computer proficiency in Excel, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, SAP, and CRM tools.
  • Excellent analytical and technical problem solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast paced, engineered to order environment.
  • Strong work ethic, accountability, and professionalism.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of applicable standards, including:
    • IEEE C57.12.00 – General Requirements
    • IEEE C57.12.90 – Test Code
    • IEEE C57.91 – Loading Guide
    • Applicable ANSI, IEEE, and utility specifications

C.    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working directly with utilities or EPC customers.
  • Prior involvement in large MVA, high‑voltage transformer projects.
  • Experience coordinating or leading project timelines and technical milestones.
  • Background in manufacturing, operations, or field service related to power transformers.
  • Customer‑facing technical support or field commissioning experience.

D.     Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for complex transformer applications.
  • Clear and confident technical communication with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities across multiple SPT projects.
  • Proficiency with engineering and business tools (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, SAP/CRM, Excel).
  • Strong ownership mindset with a focus on quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.

E.     Work Environment

  • Based at the Lake Mary, FL facility.
  • Hybrid flexibility available; some work‑from‑home permitted based on project needs.
