Position Overview
Job Summary
The Applications Engineer serves as the technical lead for medium-voltage power distribution projects in an engineered-to-order manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for translating customer requirements into compliant, manufacturable solutions by reviewing specifications, coordinating technical documentation and submittals, supporting testing activities, resolving technical issues, and collaborating with customers and cross-functional teams throughout project execution.
Depending on experience and demonstrated capability, the Applications Engineer may support technical activities under guidance, independently manage project execution, lead complex projects, mentor engineers, establish technical standards, and serve as subject matter expert for JST products, industry standards, and engineering best practices.
A. Key Responsibilities
Technical Project Execution
- Review customer specifications, drawings, and technical requirements.
- Interpret project requirements and develop compliant technical solutions.
- Coordinate technical submittals, approvals, and project documentation.
- Lead or support customer design reviews and technical discussions.
- Resolve technical issues arising during engineering, manufacturing, testing, and field service.
- Evaluate technical risks and recommend appropriate solutions.
Engineering Support
- Provide technical support to manufacturing, engineering, sales, and service teams.
- Ensure projects comply with company and industry standards.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives for processes and products.
- Development of engineering standards, tools, and best practices.
Compliance and Standards
- Apply and interpret relevant IEEE, ANSI, IEC, UL, utility, EPC, and customer standards.
- Ensure project compliance with technical, quality, and safety requirements.
- Provide guidance on standards interpretation and technical requirements.
Testing and Validation
- Support or lead factory acceptance testing activities.
- Develop test plans, review test documentation, and evaluate results.
- Participate in troubleshooting and root-cause investigations.
- Support witness testing and customer acceptance activities.
Customer and Industry Engagement
- Serve as a technical point of contact for customers.
- Participate in customer meetings, factory visits, and technical presentations.
- Represent JST at trade shows, conferences, standards committees, and industry events.
- Support strategic customer relationships through technical expertise.
B. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- Knowledge of electrical power distribution systems.
- Ability to interpret technical specifications, drawings, and diagrams.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
C. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with medium-voltage switchgear, substations, and transformers.
- Ability to create and review mechanical layouts and electrical schematics
- Knowledge of SCADA systems, relay protection schemes, substation automation
- Familiarity with communication protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP3, and Modbus.
- Knowledge of relevant IEEE, ANSI, IEC, and UL standards. (IEEE C37.20.9, IEC 62271-100, etc)
- Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
- Experience with ERP, PDM, or engineering business systems.
- Manufacturing or engineered-to-order project experience.
